Permanent Resident (PR)
Permanent residency in Indonesia allows individuals to live in the country indefinitely without time limitations. A permanent residency card is issued to confirm this status and must be presented with passports during entry or exit. Notably, foreign individuals can maintain their original citizenship while being permanent residents in Indonesia.
Residency vs Citizenship
Residency and citizenship are distinct. Residency can be temporary or permanent, while citizenship offers comprehensive rights.
Benefits of Permanent Residency
Gaining permanent residency in Indonesia offers advantages such as unrestricted travel, business opportunities, tax identification, financial flexibility, local pricing for tourist attractions, civic participation, and extended stay with multiple entries.
Obtaining Permanent Residency
Typically, it takes five years of continuous residence to obtain permanent residency in Indonesia. Exceptions include investment, marriage to an Indonesian citizen, exceptional talents, or highly skilled worker visas.
Types of Residency
Foreigners in Indonesia can obtain two types of residency permits: temporary (ITAS/KITAS) and permanent (ITAP/KITAP).
Application Process
To become eligible for permanent residency, foreign individuals must obtain a sponsorship letter, secure a recommendation from the Directorate General of Immigration, and submit the required documents and a letter to obtain a Limited Stay Permit (KITAS or VITAS) at the Indonesian Embassy. After consecutively holding KITAS/ITAS for over five years, they can convert it to KITAP for permanent residency.
