Indonesian Identity Card (KTP)
The Indonesian Identity Card (Kartu Tanda Penduduk or KTP) is a compulsory piece of identification issued to Indonesian citizens and residents from the age of 17 or upon marriage. Issued by the Indonesian government, it is valid for life for citizens and for the duration of the residency permit for non-citizens. Since 2011, an electronic version of the card, the e-KTP (KTP elektronik), has also been offered. The e-KTP contains a microchip that holds unique biometric data designed to improve government services, enhance population databases, and minimise fraud and security threats. The card serves as a basis for other identity documents such as passports and driving licenses. The implementation of the e-KTP was marred with corruption allegations that tainted its initial rollout. Despite these challenges, the e-KTP program was able to register and verify over 100 million biometric identities in less than a year.
